The World Debut of the Volkswagen I.D. Electric Concept Car
Huge buzz surrounded the recent debut of the Volkswagen I.D. electric concept car at the Paris Motor Show, and people are still chattering about it. With its 168-hp electric motor and a range of up to 373 miles, it’s no wonder critics alike are amazed by this zero-emissions concept. While it won’t be available for our Schaumburg and Elmhurst right away, there’s plenty we already know about the I.D., so keep reading to learn more!
At first glance, the Volkswagen I.D. looks straight out of a futuristic movie. Its shape has a distant resemblance of the Golf with a long wheelbase and very short overhangs. The front end structure will allow the front wheels to turn sharply and give it a small turning radius of 32.5 feet, while the flat lithium-ion battery that is integrated into the floor lowers the center of gravity and results in an ideal axle load/weight distribution. It also features a transparent illuminated Volkswagen logo and large sculpted bumpers and “Anodized Blue” diffusers, which give it a unique appearance.
The I.D. is based on the newly developed Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) with a fully electric powertrain. The I.D.’s zero-emissions powertrain consists of the electric motor, power electronics, transmission, a high-voltage flat battery, and ancillary equipment integrated in the front of the car.
The electric motor has an output of 168 hp (125 kW), which allows the I.D to go from zero to 62 mph in less than 8 seconds. It will also have a range of between 249 and 373 miles on a single charge. The battery can be charged by cable or using an inductive charging interface in the front of the car, and with its rapid charging system the battery can achieve a charge of 80 percent in about 30 minutes.
I.D. signifies not only the name of the electric car but also the individual profile I.D. that will be assigned to every user. Each unique I.D. will save personal settings, including seat position, air conditioning settings, your favorite radio stations and songs, navigation configuration, the type of ambient lighting preferred, and all of the contact details of the driver’s friends and business associates. This profile I.D is stored to the cloud and it enables the I.D. car to know who is getting behind the wheel based on the smartphone or smart key in your pocket.
